Stained or Yellow Teeth
Stained or yellow teeth can usually be brightened with professional whitening, and stains that whitening cannot reach can be covered with bonding or veneers. The right treatment depends on whether the stain is on the surface of the enamel or deeper within the tooth. Dr. Jaime Lee evaluates the type of discoloration and explains which option will brighten your smile.

What causes stained or yellow teeth?
Surface stains come from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and other pigmented foods and drinks. Teeth can also look more yellow with age as the outer enamel thins and the yellower layer beneath, called dentin, shows through. Deeper discoloration can come from certain medications taken in childhood, an injury to a tooth, or old fillings that have darkened.
How are stains removed or covered?
| Treatment | What it does | Often fits |
|---|---|---|
| Professional cleaning | Polishes away surface stains | Light surface staining |
| Professional whitening | Lightens stains within the enamel | Yellowing from food, drink, or age |
| Dental bonding | Covers a stained area with tooth-colored resin | A single discolored spot or tooth |
| Veneers | Cover the front of the teeth in a new shade | Deeper stains that do not respond to whitening |
| Replacing old fillings | Swaps darkened fillings for tooth-colored ones | Stains caused by older restorations |
How does Dr. Lee choose the right treatment?
Dr. Lee examines your teeth to see whether the discoloration is on the surface or within the tooth, and whether existing fillings or crowns are involved. She also checks that your teeth and gums are healthy before any whitening. She then explains what each option can achieve so you can choose the result you want.
Why choose professional whitening over store-bought products?
Professional whitening uses stronger gels than store-bought kits, and Dr. Lee chooses the approach based on your staining and any sensitivity. She also protects your gums during treatment. She also identifies stains that whitening will not change, so you know what to expect before you begin.
When should you schedule an evaluation?
Schedule an evaluation when you would like a brighter smile, or when a single tooth darkens compared with its neighbors. A single darkening tooth can follow an injury or a change in the nerve, and Dr. Lee will evaluate it before suggesting cosmetic options.
Frequently asked questions
Does whitening work on all stains?
Whitening works best on yellowish stains from food, drink, and age. Gray or deep stains, and stains on crowns or fillings, may need bonding or veneers instead.
How long does whitening last?
Results fade gradually, especially with coffee, tea, or tobacco, and can be refreshed with touch-up whitening.
Is whitening safe for my teeth?
Professional whitening is safe for healthy teeth when used as directed. Temporary sensitivity is common and usually fades within a few days.
