When is dental swelling an emergency?

If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, call 911 or go to an emergency room right away. For other swelling, call Smile Art the same day, since swelling often means a problem is spreading beyond the tooth.

If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or bleeding will not stop, call 911 or go to an emergency room right away.

What can I do until I see Dr. Lee?

For first-aid steps, we share the American Dental Association's guidance, quoted word for word:

"When you have a dental emergency, it's important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible."

Source: American Dental Association, MouthHealthy, "Dental Emergencies".

What causes swelling around the teeth?

Infection is the most common cause, either inside a tooth or in the gum beside it. Gum tissue over a partly erupted wisdom tooth can swell, and injuries to the mouth or face can also cause swelling. Each cause calls for different care, which is why the exam matters.

What happens after the swelling is treated?

Once the source is treated, Dr. Lee checks that the swelling is going down and that the tooth or gum is healing. She then explains any further care, such as a crown after a root canal or ongoing gum treatment.

What causes dental swelling, and how is it treated?

Dr. Lee examines the swollen area, the teeth and the gums, and takes X-rays if needed to find the source. Treatment depends on the cause and may include treating an infected tooth, a wisdom tooth, or the gums. She explains what she finds and the next steps.

Related care: Root canal treatment, Wisdom tooth removal, Gum disease treatment.
