Gaps Between Teeth
Gaps between teeth can be closed with dental bonding, veneers, or clear aligners, depending on the size of the space and its cause. Small gaps between front teeth often respond to bonding or veneers, while wider or multiple gaps are usually closed by moving the teeth with aligners. Dr. Jaime Lee evaluates the space and explains which option fits your smile.

What causes gaps between teeth?
Gaps, also called diastemas, often form when the teeth are slightly small for the jaw or when a tooth is missing. A large band of tissue between the front teeth, called a frenum, can also hold the teeth apart. Gum disease can cause new spaces as the bone supporting the teeth changes, so Dr. Lee checks the gums when a gap appears or grows.
How can gaps between teeth be closed?
| Option | How it closes the gap | Often fits |
|---|---|---|
| Dental bonding | Tooth-colored resin is shaped onto the sides of the teeth | Small gaps, usually in a single visit |
| Veneers | Custom shells cover the front of the teeth and widen them slightly | Small to moderate gaps, with changes to shape or color |
| Clear aligners | Trays gradually move the teeth together | Wider or multiple gaps, or gaps with crowding elsewhere |
| Replacing a missing tooth | An implant or bridge fills the space | Gaps left by a missing tooth |
How does Dr. Lee choose the right option?
Dr. Lee measures the gap, checks the size and shape of the neighboring teeth, and evaluates your gums and bite. She explains whether adding to the teeth or moving them will give the most natural result.
When should you schedule an evaluation?
Schedule an evaluation when you would like to close a gap, or when a new space appears between teeth that used to touch. A new gap can be a sign of changes in the gums or bite, and Dr. Lee will evaluate the cause before recommending treatment.
What affects the cost?
The cost depends on the treatment, the number of teeth involved, and the material used. Bonding usually involves the fewest steps, while aligners and veneers involve more planning. Plans differ in how they cover cosmetic work, and our team will verify your benefits before your appointment.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gap be closed without braces?
Yes. Small gaps can often be closed with bonding or veneers, and wider gaps can often be closed with clear aligners. Dr. Lee explains which fits your teeth.
Is bonding a permanent fix?
Bonding can wear or pick up stain over time and may need touch-ups. Dr. Lee checks it at your routine visits.
Can a gap come back after it is closed?
Teeth moved with aligners can shift back without a retainer, so retainers are part of orthodontic treatment.
