Getting Used to New Dentures
New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold them in place, according to the American Dental Association. Minor soreness and a temporary increase in saliva are common at first. Follow-up visits let Dr. Lee check the fit and adjust any sore spots.

What should you expect in the first weeks?
| Time | What to expect |
|---|---|
| First days | The dentures feel bulky; saliva may increase; minor sore spots can appear |
| First weeks | Eating and speaking become easier with practice |
| Follow-up visits | Dr. Lee checks the fit and adjusts pressure points |
How do you eat with new dentures?
- Start with soft foods cut into small pieces.
- Chew slowly, using both sides of your mouth at the same time to keep the dentures steady.
- Add firmer foods gradually as you gain confidence.
- Avoid very sticky or hard foods.
How do you get used to speaking?
Some words may sound different at first while your tongue and lips adjust. Reading aloud and repeating difficult words helps you speak naturally more quickly. If your dentures slip when you laugh or cough, gently bite down and swallow to reposition them.
How do you clean and store dentures?
Rinse your dentures to remove loose food, then brush all surfaces daily with a soft brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser (regular toothpaste can scratch them). Brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth each morning before putting your dentures in. When you are not wearing them, keep them covered in water so they do not warp, and remove them at night as Dr. Lee advises.
When should you call the office?
Call the office if a sore spot does not improve within a few days, if the dentures feel loose, or if they crack or chip. Do not adjust or repair dentures yourself, since that can change the fit.
Frequently asked questions
Should I sleep in my dentures?
The ADA recommends removing full or partial dentures at night so the tissues of your mouth can rest. Dr. Lee will advise you if your situation calls for something different.
Can I use denture adhesive?
Adhesives can help some patients when used exactly as directed. Look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, and tell Dr. Lee if you need adhesive to keep a denture in place.
Do I still need dental check-ups with dentures?
Yes. Regular check-ups let Dr. Lee check the fit of your dentures and the health of your gums and mouth.
