Aftercare
Aftercare for Dental Implant Surgery
After implant surgery, the bone heals around the implant over several months in a process called osseointegration, according to the American Dental Association. Some swelling, tenderness, and light oozing are common in the first days. Protecting the area and following a soft diet help the implant heal securely.

What should you do in the first days?
- Bite gently on gauze if the area oozes, for the time Dr. Lee recommends.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face, on and off, during the first day to limit swelling.
- Rest with your head raised, and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
- Do not smoke, spit forcefully, or drink through a straw.
- Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed.
What can you eat?
The ADA notes that your dentist may recommend soft foods, cold foods, and warm soup during healing. Avoid chewing on the implant site, and avoid hard, crunchy foods and small seeds that could lodge near the area. Dr. Lee will tell you when you can return to your usual diet.
How do you keep the area clean?
Brush your other teeth as usual and clean gently near the implant as Dr. Lee instructs. Gentle warm saltwater rinses are often started the day after surgery. Keeping the area clean protects the gum and bone as they heal around the implant.
What happens while the implant heals?
The bone gradually grows around the implant and holds it in place, which can take several months. You may wear a temporary tooth, bridge, or denture during this time so you can eat and speak normally. Once the implant is secure, Dr. Lee attaches the final crown, bridge, or denture.
When should you call the office?
Call the office if bleeding continues after steady pressure, if swelling or pain increases after the third day, or if you develop a fever. Call as well if the implant or a temporary tooth feels loose.
Frequently asked questions
How much swelling is normal after implant surgery?
Some swelling is common and usually peaks within the first few days, then eases. Swelling that increases after that should be checked.
Does smoking affect implant healing?
Yes. Tobacco can slow healing, so avoid it while the implant heals.
