Aftercare for Dental Sedation

After sedation, you may feel drowsy, relaxed, or unsteady for several hours, so you will need a responsible adult to take you home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day while the effects wear off. Dr. Lee gives you specific instructions based on the type of sedation used.

What should you arrange before your visit?

  • A responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day
  • Time to rest at home after your appointment
  • Any medications Dr. Lee has prescribed, ready at home
  • Comfortable clothing for your visit

Follow Dr. Lee's instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment.

What should you do for the rest of the day?

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions until the sedation has fully worn off.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Rest, and have someone help you on stairs or when walking at first.
  • Start with fluids, then soft foods once you are fully alert and any numbness has worn off.
  • Take medications only as Dr. Lee directs.

What is normal after sedation?

Drowsiness, mild forgetfulness about the visit, and a dry mouth are common for several hours. The ADA notes that the type of procedure, your overall health, and your anxiety level all help determine which sedation is used. The aftercare for your treatment, such as an extraction or a filling, also applies.

When should you call the office?

Call the office if drowsiness lasts beyond the evening, if you cannot keep fluids down, or if you have questions about your medications. Call 911 for trouble breathing or any emergency.
