Aftercare

Aftercare for a Root Canal

After root canal treatment, the tooth and the area around it may feel sensitive for a few days, according to the American Dental Association. The pain you felt before treatment should be gone, and the tenderness usually eases steadily. The tooth then needs its final filling or crown to protect it.

What is normal after a root canal?

Tenderness when biting and mild soreness around the tooth are common for a few days as the surrounding tissues heal. Your jaw may also feel tired from keeping your mouth open during treatment. Over-the-counter pain relievers taken as Dr. Lee recommends usually control the discomfort.

How should you care for the tooth?

  • Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
  • Chew on the other side until the tooth has its final filling or crown.
  • Avoid hard and sticky foods that could crack the tooth or dislodge a temporary filling.
  • Brush and floss as usual, gently around the treated tooth.
  • Take any prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed.

Why does the tooth need a crown or filling?

A tooth treated with a root canal usually has a temporary filling until its final restoration is placed. The final filling or crown seals the tooth and protects it from cracking, so it should be placed at the earliest opportunity. Dr. Lee explains which restoration your tooth needs.

When should you call the office?

Call the office if pain grows stronger after the first few days, if swelling appears or increases, or if you notice a reaction to a medication. Call as well if the temporary filling comes out or your bite feels uneven.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the tooth be sore?

Most tenderness eases over a few days. Sensitivity that keeps getting stronger should be checked.

Can I go back to work after a root canal?

Most people return to their usual activities the same day or the next day once the numbness wears off.

How long does a tooth treated with a root canal last?

How long it lasts depends on the tooth and its final restoration. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups help keep it healthy.
