Caring for Clear Aligners

Clear aligners work when they are worn for most of the day and night, so caring for them is part of your treatment. Keeping the trays and your teeth clean protects your teeth while the aligners cover them. When treatment is complete, retainers preserve the results, according to the American Dental Association.

How long should you wear your aligners?

Wear your aligners for the full daily time your treatment plan calls for, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. Time out of the trays slows tooth movement and can extend treatment. Keep your case with you so the aligners are stored safely when they are out.

How do you clean your aligners?

  • Rinse the aligners each time you remove them.
  • Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap or a cleaner Dr. Lee recommends.
  • Rinse with cool or lukewarm water, never hot water, which can warp the trays.
  • Brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.

What about eating and drinking?

Take your aligners out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Sugary or colored drinks can collect under the trays and affect your teeth or stain the aligners. If you cannot brush after a meal, rinse your mouth well before putting the trays back in.

What should you expect with a new set?

Many people feel pressure for a day or two after switching to a new set, which shows the teeth are moving. Switching at bedtime lets the first hours pass while you sleep. The pressure usually eases as the teeth adjust.

When should you call the office?

Call the office if an aligner cracks, no longer fits, or rubs your gums, or if you lose a tray. Dr. Lee will tell you whether to move to the next set or wait for a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What if I lose an aligner?

Call the office. Dr. Lee will tell you whether to wear your previous set or move to the next one while a replacement is arranged.

Will I need a retainer?

Yes. Retainers preserve and stabilize the results of orthodontic treatment, because teeth can move after active alignment is complete.

Can I drink coffee with my aligners in?

Take your aligners out for coffee and other drinks besides water, since hot and colored drinks can stain or warp the trays.
