Bleeding After a Tooth Extraction

A small amount of bleeding after a tooth extraction is normal, according to the American Dental Association. Light oozing or pink saliva can continue for up to a day while the blood clot forms. Steady pressure with gauze usually controls it, and bleeding that does not slow with pressure is a reason to call the office.

How do you stop bleeding after an extraction?

  1. Place fresh gauze. Fold a clean gauze pad, dampen it slightly, and place it directly over the socket.
  2. Bite down firmly. Hold steady pressure without talking or checking the area for the time Dr. Lee recommends.
  3. Rest with your head raised. Sit or lie with your head above your heart, which reduces blood flow to the area.
  4. Repeat if needed. If light oozing continues, replace the gauze and apply pressure again.

How long does bleeding last?

Most bleeding slows within the first few hours, and light oozing can continue for up to about a day. Saliva mixed with a little blood can look like more bleeding than it is. Some oozing can last a little longer after a surgical extraction.

What can make bleeding start again?

  • Spitting, rinsing vigorously, or drinking through a straw
  • Smoking
  • Hot drinks and foods in the first day
  • Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting
  • Touching the socket with your tongue or fingers

When should you call the office?

Call the office if bleeding remains heavy after steady pressure, if your mouth keeps filling with blood, or if bleeding returns after it had stopped. Call right away if you feel faint or dizzy. If you take blood thinners, follow the specific instructions Dr. Lee gives you.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I keep gauze on the socket?

Keep steady pressure on it for the time Dr. Lee recommends. If the area is still oozing when you remove it, place fresh gauze and press again.

Is it normal to see blood in my saliva the next day?

Yes. A little pink saliva the day after an extraction is common as the clot settles. Steady or heavy bleeding is not, and you should call the office.
