Loose or Broken Implant Crown in Seattle
The crown on a dental implant can loosen or chip over time. Dr. Jaime Lee evaluates loose and broken implant crowns at Smile Art on First Hill.
What should I do if my implant crown is loose?
Call (206) 325-7200 to schedule a visit as soon as the same day, and avoid chewing on that side. If the crown comes off, keep it and bring it with you.
What can I do until I see Dr. Lee?
For first-aid steps, we share the American Dental Association's guidance, quoted word for word:
"When you have a dental emergency, it's important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible."
Source: American Dental Association, MouthHealthy, "Dental Emergencies".
Why does an implant crown loosen?
An implant crown is held by a small screw or cement, and either can loosen with years of chewing. Grinding or clenching can add strain. Occasionally the gum and bone around the implant are involved, which Dr. Lee checks.
What happens after the crown is secured?
Dr. Lee checks your bite on the crown and reviews the implant at your routine visits. If grinding played a role, she may recommend a night guard. If your implant was placed by another dentist, bring any records you have about it, since they help her identify the parts used and plan the repair.

How is a loose implant crown fixed?
Dr. Lee examines the crown, the parts that connect it to the implant, and the gum around it, and takes X-rays if needed. She then explains what is loose and the options for repairing it.

Frequently asked questions
Is a loose implant crown an emergency?
It should be seen promptly so the crown and implant can be checked.
Should I bring the crown if it came off?
Yes. Bring it to your visit.
Can an implant crown placed elsewhere be evaluated here?
Yes. Dr. Lee evaluates the crown and implant and explains your options.
Does a loose crown mean the implant failed?
Not necessarily. Often the crown or a connecting part has loosened, which Dr. Lee checks during the exam.
Should I keep wearing the crown if it moves?
Call the office and describe what's happening. Dr. Lee can tell you how soon to come in and what to bring, such as the crown if it has come off.
