What should I do if my bridge comes loose?

Keep the bridge and bring it with you, and call (206) 325-7200 to schedule a visit as soon as the same day. Avoid household glues, which can damage the bridge and the teeth.

If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or bleeding will not stop, call 911 or go to an emergency room right away.

What can I do until I see Dr. Lee?

For first-aid steps, we share the American Dental Association's guidance, quoted word for word:

"When you have a dental emergency, it's important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible."

Why do bridges loosen or break?

The cement holding a bridge can wear over many years. Decay on one of the supporting teeth can loosen the bridge, and heavy biting or grinding can crack it. A bridge that rocks when you chew should be checked before it comes loose completely.

What happens after the repair?

If the bridge is re-cemented, Dr. Lee checks your bite and the supporting teeth at routine visits. If it needs replacing, she explains the options, including an implant, and the steps involved. She also checks the bridge and the teeth that support it at your routine cleanings.

Can a loose bridge be re-cemented?

Dr. Lee examines the bridge and the teeth that support it. If both are sound, the bridge may be re-cemented; if not, she explains the options for repairing or replacing it.
